Stardew Valley's 1.6 update will be released sometime today (PST), and since Eric “ConcernedApe” Barone didn't give us an exact time, I was prepared to spend most of my day staring aimlessly at the Steam page and to wait for any signs of life. But thanks to a shockingly long list, I can now pass the time going through all the compatible mods instead.
1.6 makes major changes to Stardew Valley's code, so it was almost a given that several mods would break if they weren't updated to be compatible with the latest version. While it hurts, this short-term pain is a fair trade-off for the exciting 1.6 update, which not only adds a whole new farm type but also makes modding easier. However, it looks like we as Barons have already put most of the problems behind us tweeted a detailed list explaining which mods are compatible with 1.6 and which are broken.
“For people who use mods: A lot of mods are already updated for 1.6 (check this out https://smapi.io/mods). I've also added a public Steam branch that allows you to stay on version 1.5.6 if you want. I recommend trying 1.6 without mods, but it’s up to you.”
There are hundreds of mods and content packs to choose from in this list. Many of the staples of a large Stardew farm are present, such as: Schedule viewerwhich I like to use to keep an eye on the other villagers, or my favorite tool for hoarding trinkets, Chests everywhere, which allows me to access storage from anywhere on the card. But unfortunately not everyone made it. Cantorsdusts All cultures, all seasons Mod that allowed me to create a mega farm where every single crop was kept at the same time is no longer maintained. So if you go to 1.6, just remove the mod and replace with Harvest anytime, anywhere instead.
Looking through the list of mods to see if any were broken opened my eyes to some of the strangest add-ons I'd ever seen – who uses them? Air strikes in Stardew Valley? But I'm not here to judge. What you do in the privacy of your farm is entirely up to you, even if it means carpet-bombing cows.
Barone also gave us a vague indication of when we can expect the update in the answers about this tweet. In response to a question from a player that we all want to know, Barone simply said that 1.6 will be released “later today (PST)”, I need to be awake and present for the update launch and I want to sleep tonight. “That's more than fair, but I'll still hold on to my screen just in case he changes his mind.
