The recent action roguelike game Spiritfall has put a new twist on the genre, combining the fighting style of platform fighters like Super Smash Bros. and MultiVersus with the ever-improving power curve of the roguelike genre. By choosing from around 150 blessings, your divine warrior can combine some wild combos to defeat your enemies – or create a bad build, die and start over.
“Spiritfall is a fast-paced action roguelite with platformer-inspired combat. Slash, slash, sling and smash a variety of enemies with an ever-changing arsenal of divine powers,” say the developers.
“This game asks the interesting question: What if Hades was Smash Bros.?” says a review on Steam – especially the review that was marked as helpful more than the others. It's a pretty succinct and direct way to summarize the fights.
Spiritfall has been in Early Access for some time, with a number of betas before it, but was only released as a proper version 1.0 on February 28th. However, there are more updates to come: better in-game stat tracking, performance improvements including a boss rush mode, new relics and weapon enchantments, and a custom run mode that lets you optimize the experience or share a seed with friends.
Spiritfall is doing pretty well, with 91% positive reviews out of a total of 800 as of press time. It was developed and self-published by indie team Gentle Giant. You can find Spiritfall on Steam for $20, but $15 is 25% off through March 6th.
