Magic: The Gathering is heading into video game territory for some of its sets this year, with a Fallout crossover first in line and both Final Fantasy and Assassin's Creed on the way. We've already looked at some of the Fallout maps, which show that we understand that the Fallout games are about reading lore on terminals and hoarding scrap until you're overloaded. The small number of Assassin's Creed maps shown so far indicate a similar understanding of the task.
While the Fallout decks are specifically intended for use in the Commander format, the Assassin's Creed cards will be available in a beginner's starter kit that includes two pre-built decks and special booster packs called “Beyond Booster.” And yes, one of the cards in these boosters is Haystack.
For a cost of two mana, Haystack lets you phase out a card so that it cannot be targeted until the next untap. Just like in the video games, an ordinary wooden cart full of hay can make you completely invisible and safe. Other themed cards taken directly from the games include Ezio, Blade of Vengeance, a 5/5 legendary creature with deathtouch, and a version of Leonardo da Vinci that empowers your thopters and turns random artifacts into even more thopters.
Some of the cards in this set get the showpiece “Memory Corridor” treatment, with characters presented against the pale backdrop of a loading screen in the Animus (also, of course, a card that lets you turn a creature you control into a copy of it) . a living being that has died). Others have a chance of appearing by chance with texts in appropriate languages such as Greek or, in the case of Leonardo da Vinci, Italian. Which is sweet.
Magic: The Gathering – Assassin's Creed will be released on July 5th.
