Cold temperatures and snow are no challenge for gardeners who sow annual and perennial seeds to jump-start spring.
The Royal Oak Garden Club is hosting a free workshop on Saturday, February 17, at 1 p.m. in the A side of the building at 1481 Wordsworth in Ferndale.
“It's a way to sow some seeds outside with all the different weather we have,” said Barb Bolton, president of the Royal Oak Garden Club. “I think it’s kind of magical how the seeds germinate and start to grow.”
Participants in the upcoming workshop will learn how to build a mini greenhouse using 1-gallon plastic milk jugs. The method offers an easy way to grow lush garden plants from February. Freezing and thawing the seeds promotes their germination.
Participants are asked to bring their own milk jug and seeds. Clear jugs are better than those that are completely white. The ROGC will provide the ground.
Erica Zador of Tumbleweed Garden Consulting will host the event, as she did last year at the same location.
“We just have fun getting our hands dirty,” Bolton said. “It seems like this activity is becoming more and more popular during this time of year when you wonder if spring will ever come.”

The Royal Oak Garden Club was founded in 1932 and focuses on horticultural education and community service.
The club features a spring garden walk and maintains a garden near the fountain at the Detroit Zoo and the Pollinator Garden on the edge of the Royal Oak Community Garden at the Churchill Community Education Center, 707 Girard Avenue
