Rustic Games BR is one of those YouTube channels with a wonderfully simple niche: what would a modern X-game (usually a Resident Evil) look like on the PS1? Her collection of adorable little anachronisms scratches the surface with her latest creation, a PS1 demake of the Resident Evil 2 remaketo be a special winner.
Well, basic algebra would lead you to believe that a PS1 demake of the Resident Evil 2 remake would just leave…Resident Evil 2, but Rustic Games BR's interpretation goes far beyond that. The video features an over-the-shoulder 3D shot of part of the iconic RE2 police station, where Leon fights a zombie and the tyrant using the 2019 remake's over-the-shoulder camera.
Last October, seemingly to celebrate the Resident Evil 4 Remake, Rustic Games BR did this a similar treatment of a scene from that game, the modified (and far scarier) introduction to the Wolverine-but-evil monster, the Garrador. These pups are already stressful enough to handle using modern controls and over-the-shoulder aiming. So just the thought of taking on one with the clunky controls of yesteryear stresses me out to the core.
Rustic Games BR has a number of other versions of recent Resident Evil games, but the creation I'm most passionate about has to be it Elden Ring – PS1 Edition. This fixed camera model shows a sort of hybrid of the first and second battles with Godfrey, and the tank control version of Elden Ring's battle looks a lot funnier than it should be. The real star of the show, however, has to be the pre-rendered background: Leyndell's otherworldly beauty could be a perfect match for the eerie quality of the pre-rendered '90s Myst-style graphics.
You can Follow Rustic Games BR on YouTube to keep up to date with their future projects, while the closest thing to what we've discussed today that's actually playable is probably the excellent Bloodborne PSX fan demake, whose creators are currently working on Not-Bloodborne Kart work.
