In a far-future world where science fiction cats rule the universe, you, as an employee of Nekokami Co., are responsible for creating worlds using spiritual technology. By placing tiles to increase the size of biomes, you allow them to become larger and more complex, providing more habitat for the Kami, the nature spirits that aid your efforts. Also, for whatever reason, all the most powerful gods seem to be cats too.
Nekokami seems to be interesting for fans of stone-laying games like village romance, but with more objective challenges and puzzles instead of endless scoring.
The currently released demo, titled Nekokami: Internship, lets you get into the groove as a world-creating servant of the spirits. It offers around three to four hours of gameplay, ranging from very simple worlds with predictable twists to a few more challenging tests of your knowledge.
Nekokami is made by indie studio Rocket-in-Bottle based in Fukuoka, Japan. This will be their first release, although the studio wants to specialize in “small and beautiful wonders on PC/Steam Deck”. Their design philosophy seems to emphasize the idea of “small but mighty,” meaning that “small-budget games should be neither superficial nor banal.”
You can find a free demo Nekokami: Internship on Steam, as well as the page for Nekokami correct.
