The Battlefront Classic Collection, released last week, received some absolutely scathing reviews and quickly landed at the bottom of Steam users' ratings list: an ominously red rating of “Overwhelmingly Negative.” But perhaps there is light at the end of the Death Star trench run?
Aspyr today released the first patch for the Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection, bringing a number of changes, optimizations and fixes to the collection. That's only to be expected – both games in the package were massively undervalued – but what's even more surprising is that the community seems to have greeted the patch with some cautious optimism.
Over on the Battlefront subreddit, fans were pleasantly surprised by the scope of the patch's fixes: “A good sign for the future,” reads one user's widely upvoted post Carter Davison“Another 1-3 of these and I think it’s in a solid place.”
“Rise of the Empire cutscenes fixed?” That’s great news. “This along with the reverse repair and the invisible walls were important repairs that I needed,” reads a response from GeneralChaz9“Faith will be restored.”
Other reactions strike the same pleasantly surprised tone, with players particularly pleased with fixes for the collection's oft-complained texture errors, lack of Y-axis reversal option, crashes, and audio glitches.
“This is exactly what we needed! I wish they had told us sooner. Literally fixes all major issues,” writes a Reddit user named jayL21.
To be clear, not all players are ready to sweep Aspyr's sins under the rug with the Battlefront Classic Collection. A post on the game's Steam forums titled “We owe Aspyr an apology” elicited numerous responses from players, all of which basically boil down to “No, we don't.”
To be honest – and this may be the only time in my life I'll say this – I agree with Steam forum users on this issue. If Aspyr can get Battlefront back on track that's fantastic, but there's no real excuse for the poor state it launched in.
Also, no one told me why the hell the game takes up 62.87GB of my SSD. In fact, this size appears to have increased to 62.88GB after this patch.
Aspyr also has yet to fix any issues with the game's aim acceleration or address the issue of a modder's work making its way into the game after the company specifically announced it would.
Maybe it's saving that for the next patch it's supposedly “planning” for. Additionally, the studio says it is “continuing to make server-side adjustments to improve the online multiplayer experience,” which should hopefully continue to alleviate some of the many multiplayer issues people have been having.
