Blizzard is testing some small changes to Overwatch 2's format in a series of short-lived hacking events, according to a Blizzard report blog entry Earlier this year, this is an effective way to “quickly understand what”. [players] like and potentially implement changes to improve gameplay.”
The previous event resulted in faster respawn times, payload speeds, and game launches. While I didn't particularly like most of these changes, unlike the last event, Double Trouble, they didn't really make a difference in my games.
Opening Overwatch 2 after a long day only to see the Quick Play icon turn purple is disarming enough, but learning that this was part of a hacked event, breaking the one-hero limit for role and open queue being lifted and teams being able to play two of the same support or DPS heroes was enough for me to finish the game and sleep early – at least that's what I should have done.
Double Trouble is only available for 24 hours, and in the short amount of time I've experienced this event, I can safely say that this is probably for the best. Facing teams with two Mercys and two Pharahs is a terrible ordeal that takes away the fun of the actually cool quick-play games, as you have to hold on and work twice as hard to counter the strange duos that emerge from the Enemy spawn spawn. At one point I thought I had started hallucinating when two Moiras chased me through the snowy streets of Nepal Village, fading in and out one after the other, hitting me with bullets of damage until I took my life into my own hands and threw myself off the side Map.
But I'm not entirely innocent – I may have spent a few games playing with my teammates. At various times we've had two Anas, a Soldier 76, and even occasionally a double Mercy, which the records show I don't approve of. Having two of the same heroes makes a significant difference, and picking the right ones can completely impact a match – two Soldier 76s with a Mercy Bag each is never okay.
While Double Trouble doesn't do much damage (aside from the psychological damage caused by dealing with two Moiras), it would have been nice if the Hacked event had simply been added to Arcade instead of hijacking Quick Play. Having the choice between playing for your life in competitive mode or double-hitting in the mode that's supposed to be less stressful is a decision I won't have to make again anytime soon.
