In the middle of a desert landscape stands the last big real tree, Gaia, and you are a strange, blobby ghost who walks around on strange tentacles and may or may not have a strange little hat. Your job is to plant other, smaller trees – very aggressive ones – to protect the last tree itself from marauding hordes of attacking humans, who I can only assume are tasked with turning the entire world into a desert, want to finish.
Bloom is made of ashes Now available for free on Steam That's a pretty good price for a video game.
From Ashes, Bloom has a pretty nice cel-shaded art style that lends itself well to the procedurally generated blob character that serves as your invincible juggernaut of a people, mowing down in classic action tower defense style. Depending on the skin and starting setup, your trees will then have to slow humans down or do most of the work.
There's some pretty good upgrade stuff to play with here: from buying types of trees between rounds, to picking up new weapons, getting bonus income when you perfect a wave of attacks, or even adding more and more moving tentacles to yours Blob Guy so he can move evenly faster.
I'm not sure how much building variety there is here, but there are half a dozen types of trees to plant (read: towers) and characters to play with, so there's at least that much. Plus it's free and I had fun for an hour, so that really counts for a lot for me. You can find From Ashes, Bloom on Steam.
