To be completely honest, I had completely forgotten about Clockwork Revolution, a distinctly BioShock Infinite-esque immersive first-person sim revealed in June 2023 by inXile Entertainment. In my defense, it's been a while since we last heard about this, but The Studio recently reminded its followers that this is happening in the most unusual way.
The reminder was prompted by a user on Twitter who, after inXile tweeted about the apparent lawlessness of Leap Day – February 29th, which, as the old nursery rhyme goes, only occurs every four – took the opportunity to ask for an update ask state of the game. InXile reacted somewhat surprisingly. With bread.
Why bread? What does that mean? How is bread contextualized within steampunk norms? The sharper minds at GamesRadar I found out: But it's not bread Breadcrumbsthe time-honored metaphor for a trail of small clues that slowly but surely leads to the solution to a puzzle, large or small.
It's a little confusing, yes, but one thing is for sure: Bread in video games has certainly come a long way over the years.
Unfortunately, that trail of breadcrumbs was very brief – just that single tweet – and resulted in nothing more interesting than a gentle reminder that, after all, the Clockwork Revolution is still happening. Which is probably not the worst idea considering, like I said, I had completely forgotten about it. I'll just assume that I'm not alone in this regard.
However, it's worth noting that this isn't the only marketing effort for Clockwork Revolution. A few weeks ago the studio released a “Masters of Marketing” video featuring two very large pieces of dough rising:
Also, there's this glimpse into inXile's creative process from December 2023, which I don't think is related to bread, but since we're here anyway, we might as well take a moment to thank the toilet kazoo:
Conclusion: I'm not sure what's going on with inXile right now, but it's still working on Clockwork Revolution and that's good enough for me. The BioShock Infinite vibe is hard to miss, but project lead Chad Moore said a few weeks after the reveal that Clockwork Revolution was truly “love child.” [Arcanum] And [Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines]“And you better believe this is a game I want to play. (And Moore should know: He worked on both games.)
To clarify, Clockwork Revolution does not currently have a release date, but is wishlistable steam.
