RuneScape studio Jagex and Steamforged Games today announced the release of two adaptations of the venerable MMO, both under the RuneScape Kingdoms brand name.
The board game RuneScape Kingdoms: Shadow of Elvarg launched back in 2022 and quickly missed its mark: offering “cooperative campaigns heavily inspired by iconic quests from the video game.” It appears to be very RuneScape-esque, revolving around quests, crafting gear, earning cloaks, and apparently the ability to bake “game-changing cakes.” The game consists of four boss campaigns in which your party balances finding and rescuing cats from trees with an ever-increasing threat level in the world.
Steamforged also clearly has it all: there are four expansions available for Shadow of Elvarg, including the Culinaromancer expansion, which contains none other than “the legendary noob NPC”. Three of the four expansions are only available directly from Steamforged Games.
The tabletop role-playing game RuneScape Kingdoms: The Roleplaying Game features its own bespoke gameplay system that is “both accessible and elegantly designed” and features optimized versions of RuneScape mechanics. The Core Book is a detailed guide to the RuneScape world of Gielinor and includes a pre-built bestiary “full of legendary monsters and bosses” so gamemasters can get on with the killing. There's a standard edition or you can buy the elegant version, which features a “luxurious leather-look cover with embossed shimmering gold text.”
“We have worked very closely with Jagex to make RuneScape Kingdoms an authentic addition to the RuneScape family and give new and existing fans another way to connect with the world they love,” says Mat Hart from Steamforged Games. “It was a special collaboration, from the concept to the finished games.”
Steamforged is probably best known for its all-conquering board game adaptation of Dark Souls, but has since grown into a video game specialist with games based on Monster Hunter World, Resident Evil, Horizon Zero Dawn and others (it also makes games with). his own settings).
RuneScape, on the other hand, is becoming more and more successful. According to Jagex, the game now has over 320 million player accounts, making it one of the most played games of all time, even taking duplicates into account. The studio now rather grandly calls it a “game for the ages.” Whether the appeal is experiencing high fantasy adventure or spending 2,500 hours killing a mole to have a baby mole, something is clearly working.
Both games can be ordered now: The role-playing game will be shipped immediately, and the board game will begin shipping March 8, 2024.
